La Llorona (The Weeping Woman)

This is a story that old ones have been telling to children for hundreds of years; some say it’s true, some say it’s just a story to scare little children...

It began long years ago in a humble village somewhere in Mexico.

In that little village there was a fine looking girl Maria Gonzales, she was of great beauty, and as she grew older, her beauty increased...

Because she was so beautiful, Maria thought she was better than everyone else.

Maria would not even look at the young men from her village; they weren’t good enough for her!!!

**When I marry** Maria would say...**I will marry the most handsome, rich man in the world**

And then, one day, into Maria's Village rode a man who seemed to be just the one she had been thinking about... and as soon as she saw him, she fell madly in love...

He was a young noble man, but she was not a lone in her love for this man, Everyone on the street watched the young man, and women everywhere wished to marry him, He was tall and strong, with deep brown eyes and blonde hair and a warm, winning smile which showed beautiful white teeth...

This man was very popular with all the ladies, and it seemed like he would never take a wife...

But Maria believed in her heart that if she could get him to notice her, let him know in some way how much she loved him, then her state of poverty would not keep them apart.

So she began to formulate her plan, and on the next day, she began to carry them out... first she got the courage to pose in front of him and looked into his eyes...

The handsome man did notice her.. and when his brown eyes looked into hers, there seemed to be a sparkle... That one moment was enough to give her hope that one day he would be hers

And a month past, and soon they were married... no party at all, everything seemed to be a secret, just the two Maria and the handsome guy.... they exchanged vows and promise to love each other till dead .

And as soon as they got married, the nobleman, bought a beautiful house for his wife, it was in the same village, but it was the biggest and most beautiful house around... Maria was so happy.. Finally she had the man she always wanted, and she wasn’t living in poverty anymore. She even had a maid....

The house was one of a kind. It was surrounded by a beautiful lake. Maria loved that lake..

Their marriage began happy, ***He is such a great husband*** Maria would say to her neighbors...

Although she dearly loved her handsome husband, he did not return her love in the manner she expected....

He was kind and attentive, but it was not long before he began staying out a little later each night.

He continued his flirtations with other women, especially the beautiful young ladies from the rich part of town, and this deeply hurt Maria’s' pride...

Maria was always left by herself at home; her husband would never take her out with him.. Some times he would leave home and he would be gone for days.., and there was nothing Maria could do..

She was scared to tell him something, maybe he would leave her forever, and she didn’t want to go back to live in poverty...

After a couple of years, and the birth of two children, Maria's handsome husband became even more distant.. He continued to go out at night and sometimes he would be gone for weeks and even months.

Word came to Maria that he was gambling and spending all his money on other women in town.. She tried to ignore all this, but it began to tear her up a little at a time..

What bothered Maria the most, was that her husband would pay more attention to the children than to her... It would come to the point where he would come home for a visit, and he would bring the children some kind of small gifts, but he would completely ignore Maria... He would not even look in her direction...

This kind of treatment began to push Maria further and further into herself.. It was driving her crazy.

Her eyes became a little wilder and her mind seemed to be off somewhere else most of the time.. Her heart was filled with hate .

She will spend day and night waiting for her husband to come home... she will spend day and night crying wondering what she did wrong.... and it was soon that she started to forget about herself, she wasn’t the beautiful Maria anymore... instead of young and attractive she began to look older and more tired... Her once soft features began to harden, and deep lines began to etch her face...

The end came on that day when Maria saw her handsome husband riding with a beautiful young woman in a big fancy car... This woman lived in the other side of town, a part of town where only the very rich were ever seen.

He got out of the car, and her children ran to meet him, and she saw her husband give them a big smile and pieces of candy, toys and some other stuff, he played with them a little bit. But he never once looked in her direction. He ignored her completely. He didn’t say a word a bout the woman. Not even apologize. As soon he was done talking to the children... he left with that woman.

Maria suspected that he regretted his marriage. But she never thought he would bring his lover to her house.

Jealous rage boiled up inside Maria. When her husband and his new young woman companion rode out of sight. She took her children to the back of her house, where the lake was.... and.

In that moment of insane anger and jealousy, she threw her children to the lake, she drowned them both.

She was out of her mind; she didn’t know what she was doing.
As soon as everything was done, she came back to her senses, and she realized what she had done. She couldn’t believe it. She had drowned her kids.... she had murdered her children.

She fell to her knees and began moaning and crying. The people who heard her crying knew that something evil had just happened...**it was the most terrifying cry, that someone could hear***that’s what they say...

after that day. Nobody knew about Maria or her husband.

She lived like an animal on the outskirts of town, eating from the garbage and sleeping wherever she felt asleep. People will treat her bad, and nobody wanted her near them... as soon as they saw her everybody will run to their houses and close their doors... they said. She lived like that for a while. Till one day...

Till that day. It was a dark stormy night... she finally threw herself into the lake at the very spot where she had murdered her children....

And that’s how Maria Gonzales finished her life... .... and she became La LLorona.. Or like you would say it in English the weeping woman...

After her dead.. It was only a few days till La llorona appeared in the village. It was Maria Spirit. Crying for her children.. Screaming their names, and crying for them... she will scream... **Hayyyyy my children... where are my children......*

In her madness and with the passage of time, Maria had completely forgotten what her children looked like., so she called out for all children, and whenever she found a child alone in the dark, near the water, she took it and drowned him with her.

Most people think this is just a tale told by parents to keep their children from playing near the water, but this is not true.. La llorona does exist.. .. I one time heard her myself. . She was crying, and it was the most awful cry you could imagine.... maybe you wont believe it, maybe you will. But La llorona still cries for her children... she comes in the dark, on the wind, seeking that which is forever lost to her...

Hope you enjoyed this one...

this is a tale my mom and grandma used to tell to us.. So I just wanted d to share it with you.. There are tons of stories about La llorona.. But all of them have the same end!!

Wow you tell it very well, it is one of the most popular, if not the most popular, ghost story here in Mexico, I wonder if your audience knows about it, if not, yhey will be quite surprised by what will go on.

This story would definitely never make it on TSR, but it is very welcome here

Sandy, how sad! I have never heard this tale before. I can certainly see why it would frighten children from the water!

I love ghost stories but I have never been good at writing them. You did a good job telling it.

Love this! So many cultures have the same story. I remember my mother telling me the story about Jason and Medea, which is even more grisly. Love what you did with this! Beautiful!!!

Oh my... what a story! It was very well told. I agree with googlegirl though, the plumbbobs (and the sky showing above the walls) did ruin the screenshots a bit, but it was still a good story, I can imagine my little nephew keeping away from the pond after reading that!

Sandy, this was wonderful! I love the way you decorated the town and the different rooms. The park were they met was very beautiful. Very attractive characters. She had been so conceited about her looks and he brought her down and destroyed all her confidence that it drove her mad! Very sad story! Me da pena confesar de que apesar de que naci en Mexico y escuche de "La Llorona" no sabia todo el cuento. Muchas gracias por compartirlo y con tan bonitas fotos! :)

Hi Sandy! Thank you for visiting my blog, I decided to check yours out and started here. I loved the short stories, your pictures are great, but the writing is excellent! I can't believe that English is not your native language, I've read many others that I couldn't even begin to understand, but yours are just perfect! It may take me a while, but I'll get to everything you've got here, I'll start with the ones that are already finished first. You have a really wonderful talent for writing and picture taking, nice work! ~Emily
